COLUMBIA, SC (SCDVA) - Veterans and military community members all came together on the University of South Carolina's campus on May 24th to honor and remember those who lost their lives protecting our country, and learn more about their rich history and ties to our state. Led by James Hull, participants were taken on a historical tour of the 328 University of South Carolina Alumni who died in uniform.
The tour included connections to the Horseshoe, Statehouse, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, War Memorial and McKissick Museum. Hull, who works in the Office of Veterans and Military services at USC certifying all VA education benefits for students, is determined to document every USC student or alumni who died while serving in uniform over the past 120 years. Hull is also a Veteran himself, having served 12 years in the Marines and Navy Reserves before being medically retired from the Marine Corps in 2014.
When he began working at the university in 2019, he became interested in the Veteran population and learning the backgrounds of those who served. The Office of Veterans and Military Service would like to continue these tours as more information becomes available regarding those former USC students who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice while in uniform.
