SC Veteran Success - "How the VA Helps Me"

December 18, 2020

Desiree Tomlinson

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Retired army veteran, Desiree Tomlinson shares her story of how the Columbia VA Healthcare System has helped her achieve personal successes, post military service.

"Dorn VA Hospital has been instrumental in helping me better myself, physically and mentally. As a disabled veteran, the medical and dental care I've received here has been nothing less than stellar, and it hasn't cost me a penny. This helps me keep down the cost of outside health insurance.

I am also a product of receiving the best mental health care a person could ever ask for. The VA has some of the best counselors I have ever experienced. They saved my life, during some of my darkest times, as I deal with major depression. I'd be really lost without the VA Healthcare Systems.

I am always proud leaving the VA Hospital, because the doctors and staff are so friendly and helpful - they have a way of making me feel special...I'm not just a number to them...they are my family. The Dorn VA Hospital has also assisted me filing my disability claims, past enrollment into Vocational Rehab Program, and I've also earned three degrees, using the VA Educational Benefits, which have helped me become an adjunct professor...one of my dream jobs.

I'm very thankful and grateful for the VA. They continue to help make my life easier and much less stressful. I'm blessed to have served and even more blessed, knowing the VA is taking care of me, so that I can take care of my family." - Desiree Tomlinson, Retired Army Veteran
